| Bio: | As of February 7th, 2008, I am a mommy of a one year old! I am a proud mama. My journal is friends only. I won't add you if I have absolutely no idea who you are, sorry. ![]() ![]() Arianna self weaned at 1 year and 4 months"If I were an Iraqi, bound to a bed, clothes taken, denied food or water and lied to... the American media would care. But I'm just a woman giving birth in America, bound to a bed, clothes taken, denied food or water and lied to."-Shannon Mitchel, ICAN Florida ![]() "Less media attention has been given to a growing hospital trend of banning natural/vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC) thereby forcing women into the operating room for a repeat cesarean. The International Cesarean Awareness Networ(ICAN) has compiled a list of more than 200 hospitals across the U.S. that now ban VBAC. Hospitals often blame the ban on escalating health care costs and the inability to provide emergency care around the clock for VBAC patients in the event of uterine rupture. This risk is 0.5 percent, according to a 2001 study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, significantly lower than the 1.3 percent risk of respiratory distress to infants as a result of scheduled cesareans. Emergencies are not isolated to VBAC women. If a hospital is unable to provide emergency care for a VBAC woman, then it is also unequipped to care for any laboring woman who might experience complications. The growing trend of hospitals banning VBAC is resulting in forced cesareans and putting the health (and lives) of women and babies at risk. It is also more responsible for the rise in cesareans than so-called patient-choice cesareans. Women deserve choices in childbirth, not only the choice to have an elective cesarean, but also the choice to avoid a repeat cesarean and deliver vaginally."- Sally Herbert, ICAN | |
